About Us: The Tenant Resource Center is a dynamic, nonprofit, membership organization that has served Wisconsin since 1980. We are dedicated to promoting positive relations between tenants and landlords as a means to educate and ensure stable housing. We operate the Dane County Eviction Diversion and Defense Partnership with Legal Action of Wisconsin, UW’s Neighborhood Law Clinic, Community Justice Inc., and other community organizations. TRC’s services include housing counseling (80,000+ calls this year), mediation, rental assistance ($20+ million of assistance provided throughout the pandemic), outreach/education, and housing law seminars throughout the state of Wisconsin.

Position Title:  Bilingual Housing Counselor
Position Type:

 Full-Time - $43,472/year - Limited evenings/weekend work required

 - In-community work; not remote

Position Overview:

Housing Counselors provide information and answer questions about housing rights and responsibilities for tenants, landlords, and service providers. Housing Counselors also assist in outreach activities through community presentations and workshops.

Roles and Responsibilities:                           

  • Provide information and answer questions about housing rights and responsibilities to tenants and landlords and housing agencies in English and Spanish.
  • Present to groups of tenants, landlords, and housing professionals on housing laws and legislative changes.
  • Assist in developing a newsletter, brochures, and other written materials for tenants, landlords, and housing professionals.
  • Maintain and distribute comprehensive housing information in Dane County.
  • Assist in obtaining feedback from the public, evaluating our services, making suggestions for our services, and implementing changes.
  • Record statistical data and assist in contract reporting requirements.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bilingual/bicultural Spanish required.
  • Case Management experience or social work-related degree a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal professionally with persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities in extreme personal crisis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of cultural competency.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, including ability to respond creatively to crisis situations.
  • History of positive working relationships with people of diverse racial/ethnic, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Be trained or able to be trained as a housing counselor in local, state, and federal housing laws, consumer protection laws, and small claims court procedures.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently and with close attention to details.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a pleasant phone manner.
  • Training or ability to learn about government and social service agencies that assist renters and persons without homes.
  • Commitment to non-profit organizations.

Additional Information:

Must have access to reliable transportation - local travel required on a regular basis
