Tenants connect with Tenant Resource Center’s staff about an eviction by dropping into one of our office spaces, calling us, receiving information from us about an eviction filing, seeing us in the community at an event, or meeting with us at court. In 2023 alone, we connected with tenants on all of the 2,437 eviction filings over the year. All of our services are available in English and Spanish.

Eviction, despite its prevalence, is a social issue that has a tendency to go undetected. Landlords can quietly and efficiently force tenants to vacate their homes with few signs left behind: a notice taped to a door, an online court record, or furniture abandoned on the curb.

2023 Report - Default Judgements in Eviction Court

The most common reason why a tenant receives a judgment of eviction in Dane County is because of a “default judgment,” which occurs when a tenant fails to show up for their scheduled court hearing. A default enables the landlord to automatically get an eviction judgment and obtain a writ of restitution without any further legal arguments.
